Resources for Medical Professionals and Clinicians
Parents may have little knowledge about pertussis, meningococcal disease, or HPV, so there are many steps you can take to ensure your patients are fully vaccinated. Recommend to parents of adolescents ages 11 to 18 years old that they vaccinate their teens. Studies show parents trust your opinion more than others and YOUR recommendation is the strongest predictor of vaccination. Ask about vaccination status when they come in for visits or physicals.
American Cancer Society News Update — Sept/Oct 2020
The American Cancer Society recently updated its guidelines for HPV vaccination. The primary message remains that HPV vaccination is cancer prevention but, instead of recommending vaccination at 11 or 12, or as early as 9, weve simplified that language to recommend HPV vaccination between ages 9 and 12.
A summary of ACS update:
- Girls and boys should get 2 doses of the HPV vaccine at ages 9 to 12 years.
- Children and young adults up to age 26 years who have not received the HPV vaccine should get vaccinated. Vaccination of young adults will not prevent as many cancers as vaccination of children and teens.
- The ACS does not recommend HPV vaccination for persons older than 26 years.
AAP-CA3 is excited to launch our HPV Vaccine Provider Education and Promotion video. This video provides up-to-date information about the burden of HPV-related disease, the rationale behind vaccinating pre-teens prior to sexual debut, the clear need for boys as well as girls to receive HPV vaccination, and vaccine safety information. The video features 8 case vignettes in which doctors demonstrate effective counseling strategies, incorporating the latest available evidence, to address the concerns of vaccine-hesitant parents. Thank you to Drs. Maya Kumar, Eyla Boies, Mark Sawyer and our AAP-CA3 HPV Sub-Committee members!

Help your patients avoid HPV cancers when they get older. Recommend HPV vaccination the same way and on the same day as Tdap and meningococcal vaccines. Parents will listen. Parents want your opinion on vaccinations. In a 2012 survey, over 70% of parents said they would get HPV vaccine for their child if the doctor recommended it.
