Oral Health

St. Luke’s Children’s “Ambulatory Quality Improvement” team has partnered with Maternal and Child Health to improve the oral health practices of providers serving Idaho’s children aged 6 months to 5 years. Sixteen practices throughout the state have committed to meaningful participation so that providers can earn Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit and physicians can receive Part IV Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points while improving their standard of care. Specifically, care teams have been tasked with adopting a screening tool to increase assessment and documentation of oral health status, increase parental education or referrals to a dental home, and/or implementing a process for the application of fluoride varnish.

Starting January 1, 2015, Idaho Medicaid will be using the new 2015 CPT® code 99188 for application of fluoride varnish for children in the physician's office. (website)
Effective January 1, 2015 for children up to 21 years of age, the application of topical fluoride varnish by a physician, or other qualified health care professional, should be billed with the new 2015 CPT® code 99188. The dental code D1208 is no longer covered for physicians by Idaho Medicaid. Application of fluoride varnish by a dentist continues to be covered through the Idaho Smiles program.
